Early Years Apprenticeships
It’s that time of year again when young people who have worked so hard over the past two years to get to this gateway to their future, experience either elation or total deflation. No matter how many times people say ‘it really doesn’t matter…you can still succeed in life’ it does not hold back the wave of disappointment that washes over you. And let’s face it, some people just cannot cope with exams – the pressure of putting all your learning into a climax of two intense hours can be completely overwhelming and can result in a ‘blank brain’ effect. If this happens to you, and exams are not your thing, then have you considered other options? It’s equally important to add that the university route does not suit everyone.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative and are often overlooked by school when presenting options. Being able to work and study alongside means that you can put the ‘theory’ into action straightaway, making more sense and embedding your learning. Employers truly value apprenticeships as they demonstrate significant work skills – commitment to the workplace, punctuality, reliability, a willingness to work hard and study hard – a good employment reference is worth its weight in gold!! Quite frankly, most employers won’t want to let go of you anyway, so you are more likely to be offered a permanent job. And don’t let anyone tell you that an apprenticeship is a soft option…. its hard work studying and working at the same time, having to perform to the best of your ability in both areas – again, this demonstrates a real commitment.
Of course, the other big plus with apprenticeships is that you are paid by your employer for your working time and your study time. In the first year this amount may well be at a lower than NMW apprentice rate, but in year 2 the rate goes up to NMW and if you were studying a full-time college course, you would not even get paid at all.
Whatever your results, make sure you consider ALL the options for your future – for more information visit the apprenticeship site or give Side by Side a call.
