Who Can Apply?

Who is eligible?

Advanced Learner Loans are available for learners aged 19 and over who are studying an eligible Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification with an approved college or training provider in England. In most cases, you must also be living in the UK on the first day of your course and meet residency requirements. Some learners with pre-settled status, refugee status, humanitarian protection, or other eligible Home Office statuses may also qualify.

Eligibility can vary depending on your individual circumstances, so we recommend speaking to our team before applying.

What can the loan cover?

The loan is designed to cover the course fee charged by your training provider for an eligible qualification. It does not cover degrees or other higher education courses with separate student finance arrangements.

How do I apply?

Once you have chosen your course, we can provide the information you need to complete your application. You can then apply online through Student Finance England. You will usually need your course details, provider information, fee amount, loan amount requested, and proof of identity.

How do repayments work?

If your course started on or after 1 August 2023, repayments usually begin from the April after you complete or leave your course, and only when your income is over £25,000 a year. Repayments are normally taken automatically through the tax system.

Example repayments

If you earn £27,000 a year, your repayment would be around £15 per month. If you earn £31,000 a year, it would be around £45 per month.
